Artist ✦ Eco-activist ✦ Scientist

Every artist and photographer tells a visual story, with each image conveying a unique narrative that captures the imagination. Every captured moment embodies a variety of emotions, thoughts and truths waiting to be discovered by a curious observer. Photography has the power to evoke deep emotions and stimulate the imagination, deepening our understanding of the world around us. Photographs act as portals to diverse lives and experiences, offering insights that we would not usually encounter.

My photograph reflects my personal journey. I don't meticulously plan or stage shots. Instead, I immerse myself in the moment, allowing the art to develop naturally. I find beauty in life's unpredictability, and each photograph tells its own vivid story, revealing the subject's essence in its purest form. This intricate process enhances my artistic practice, ensuring that each photograph serves as a testament to the moment it represents. Having grown up surrounded by the beauty of nature, I was constantly inspired by the intricate details and vast landscapes that filled my days with wonder and admiration. Witnessing the changing seasons and the interplay of light and colour heightened my awareness of my surroundings. This abundance of visual experiences ignited my passion for art and environmental awareness, inspiring me to explore the connections between the two. As a scientist, I perceive a beautiful synergy where art intersects with science, merging creative expression with empirical investigation. Both fields rely on keen observation, pattern recognition and imaginative insight to interpret the world around us in countless ways. Every time I engage with this intersection, new avenues of creativity emerge, fostering a deeper appreciation of nature and our place within it.

Plant A Tree Day

Borneo 06.28.2019

Environment Projects

According to the FAO, trees and forests play four key roles in the context of climate change. They currently account for around one-sixth of global carbon emissions when they are cleared, overused, or degraded. They are also sensitive to changes in the climate. When managed sustainably, they produce wood fuels that can serve as a benign alternative to fossil fuels. Finally, they have the potential to absorb around one-tenth of the projected global carbon emissions for the first half of this century, storing them in their biomass, soils, and products indefinitely.

Did you know that a single tree can remove over a tonne of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere during its lifetime? Trees and forests play a crucial global role. The composition of the atmosphere directly influences our planet’s climate.

On average, a person breathes in around 9.5 tonnes of air per year, but oxygen makes up only about 23 per cent of that by mass. We only extract a little over a third of the oxygen from each breath. This equates to around 740 kg of oxygen per year. This is equivalent to the work of seven or eight trees.

Without trees, however, the air we all depend on would be much thinner. Trees absorb carbon dioxide through their leaves and break it down, releasing oxygen into the air. Depending on their size and type, one mature tree can produce enough oxygen for up to 18 people. Together with other plants, trees have produced enough oxygen to fill one-fifth of the Earth’s atmosphere. This makes our planet the only member of the solar system with such high levels of oxygen for living organisms.

The carbon cycle is one of the main influences on the Earth’s climate. It consists of carbon stored in the Earth’s crust (including fossil fuels), soils, vegetation, oceans and the atmosphere, as well as the exchange of gases between these so-called carbon pools. Scientists are now studying the consequences of warming oceans killing phytoplankton, which produce half of the Earth’s oxygen and form the basis of marine ecosystems.

Planting more trees and halting deforestation would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are causing the oceans to warm and oxygen-producing phytoplankton to die off. This is another reason why trees are often called 'the lungs of the world'.

Trees and forests are unique organisms that provide shelter and shade for all living things, offering sustenance without demanding anything in return and generously providing the products of their life's work.

When people plant a tree, they plant hope, so why wait? Let's plant a tree for the Earth and for the future of our lovely planet. For this reason, I have set up a project called 'Plant a Tree Day', the first annual event of which will be held in Borneo, Indonesia this year.

Everyone can join this ecological initiative! Thank you in advance for your kind attention and support.
